ALBERTA LPNs: FAIR PAY FOR FULL SCOPE!
We are Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in Alberta
The Alberta government is offering LPNs a 21% raise over 4 yearsĀ - and theyāll say we should be grateful.
But hereās the truth:
9.5% is NOT a Raise:Ā It is a Scope of Practice Adjustment. This compensates LPNs for officially performing a higher level of work (like administering blood products, dispensing drugs, etc.) that they were already doing or trained to do, and which was previously the exclusive domain of RNs. This is pay for increased professional responsibility, not a general salary boost.
12% is the Real Raise:Ā This is the 3% annual compound increase over four years.
š§Ø LPNs took multiple 0% increases for years.Ā Ā
š§Ø We received no raiseĀ when our scope of practice expanded dramatically.
š§Ø And this 21% offer? It doesnāt even catch us up to inflation.
Meanwhile, by 2027:
The top-paid LPNĀ will earn $44.53/hour
The starting RNĀ (no experience, no BSN) will earn $45.90/hour
š Thatās a wage gap of $1.37/hour (3%), where the most experienced LPNs still earn less than entry-level RNs.
š By 2027, the difference in pay between Alberta nurses will be stark:
Entry-level LPNs vs. entry-level RNs:Ā a 25.95% wage gap
Most senior LPNs vs. most senior RNs:Ā a 29.11% wage gap
And yet, in Alberta hospitals:
ā LPNs and RNs work side-by-side, doing the 84% or more tasksĀ Ā
ā Alberta LPNs have the widest scope of practice in CanadaĀ Ā
ā LPNs are leaders, educators, and frontline experts
This isnāt about greed. Itās about respect, recognition, and economic justice.
Weāre not asking for more than we deserve. Weāre asking to be valued for what we already give - every shift, every patient, every unit.
